To Be What Society Needs
-Our Philosophy-
The following is a statement that our President wrote for Marimo Group employees.
This statement appears at the beginning of the handbook to the Marimo Group's philosophy, "The Marimo Way".
Only companies that coexist with society will endure
If you reverse the two kanji characters in the Japanese word for "company," you form the word for "society." A company and society are one and the same. To put it simply, a company is a society within itself. If a company is running a business that is not in harmony with society, it is a distorted corporate organization. Even if said company maintains performance over the short term, it will likely be eliminated over the longer term. In a conventional capitalist society based on greed, a company could survive as long as it kept generating profits. However, I do not think this will be the case in the future. I feel the greed-first capitalist society has gone too far. As a result, environmental and other social problems are becoming more and more serious. I truly wonder whether we can sustain this trajectory. Since a company is synonymous with society, shouldn't we, as businesspeople, go beyond measuring success in terms of profit and instead take the initiative to do more to address social issues? To further my point, if we fail to continue contributing to the world with the idea of doing good for others, society will consider us unnecessary, and we will eventually become incapable of earning a profit. This is exactly what the spirit of "altruism and appreciation" is.
Becoming a company for both society and business
I have always said that I do not want to run a business based on profit. I want to run it based on heart. Allow me to clarify that this doesn't mean neglecting profit. Action that places emphasis on heart will ultimately lead to the creation of longer-term profit and steady performance. Management that provides every employee with fulfillment and purpose will lead directly to the company's continuity. This is my belief. When I say "heart," I mean finding joy in doing good for others. According to Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a "social business company" is an enterprise that, rather than aiming to maximize its own profit, uses business as a means for addressing problems that people and society face. This is the idea of a company that finds joy in doing good for others. I am confident that our goal of becoming a social business company is in concert with this era in which we will seek to create a post-greed capitalist society. In our ten-year vision toward 2030, we have set forth the goal of promoting social business. A social business is one that pursues benefits for society more than profits for itself. You may know that the Marimo Group aims to be a company that is 50% business-focused and 50% socially focused by following the Marimo Activity Portfolio (MAP). The MAP reflects the behavioral guidelines provided in this booklet on "combining two opposites." "Social" and "Business." At first glance, they may seem contradictory, but the combination of the opposites has significance. I believe that the right company for a post-greed capitalist society is an organization combining both social and business aspects. As a result of our intention to become a social business company, we will not, for example, lose value in our Condominium Business or our Profitable Real Estate Creation Business. These businesses have been Marimo's foundation, and their importance will remain unchanged in the future. Besides, there has always been value in providing housing and condominiums. What's important is to recognize the social value of our business and to think about how we can further enhance our contribution to society. If we take joy in doing good for others and sincerely address the issues that society faces, our business will become even more valuable.
Cultivating talent is the ultimate contribution to society
Wouldn’t it so wonderful to have a company where people always think about how we can contribute to society through our business and work and then act accordingly? Together with you, I hope to make the Marimo Group such a corporate group. And I believe that the most important thing to achieve this is to cultivate talent. That means shaping people into useful members of our community. I believe that this is the ultimate contribution to society, and I feel that producing talent who can face humanity with an altruistic mindset is the mission a company must pursue in order to endure. I believe the Marimo Group will continue to develop an increasingly diverse range of businesses aimed at addressing society's issues. New business development and M&A strategies will be more intense than ever, and existing businesses will expand along with the creation of new value. As a result, I envision a group with many different types of people taking on all kinds of challenges through a variety of jobs and projects. I believe that such a diverse organization is a prerequisite for the perpetuation of a wonderful company over the coming decades. Diversity allows potential. All employees, whether they are driving a new business or developing an existing one, learn together in one group. By communicating with other employees who have varied knowledge, skills, outlooks on the world, and perspectives on life, we are exposed to different ways of thinking which helps us gain new knowledge and inspire each other. Being in such an environment will lead you to broaden not only your work but also your own horizons. It is my hope that you will greatly improve your humanity and social skills in this corporate group.
So every individual can shine
As society changes, it is inevitable that companies will change. As a corporate employee, it is essential to have the courage and open-mindedness to change oneself. That is why we aim to break out of our shell and transform ourselves into a diverse corporate group. However, my desire to unite the Marimo Group through a common mindset remains unchanged. Although we may have different personalities, I want us to adopt a unified way of thinking. I want us to grow together with our colleagues who are connected through this mindset and believe in each other. However, no excessive cooperation or groupthink will be forced upon anyone. Some people may be more individualistic than others. I want us to be an organization that tolerates such people, as there are many different paths to self-actualization. This is also a way to be a diverse corporate group. The Marimo Group should be like a dojo where each individual can elevate his or her own personal qualities. I have written about this many times since we first compiled "The Marimo Way." The significance of this booklet, which outlines the values and ideas we should share, remains the same. What action should you take and what mindset should you adopt so that each one of you can shine as a leading actor on the stage of Marimo? Pick up this booklet from time to time to further deepen your learning. The process of becoming a social business company is a journey to create individual fulfillment and purpose. As you explore how you can contribute to society, I hope you will deepen your joy in doing good for others, as well as your appreciation for friends and family. Finding a balance between work and home, work time and personal time, a worklife balance, is important. It would be wonderful if, by thinking together, each of you can find your own purpose, and when you retire someday, you can say, "I'm glad I worked for this company." I believe that this here is our company's raison d'être. Let's put the spirit of the Marimo Way into practice together.
